Accessibility statement for CIRV-NSD

This website is run by Northants Police. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website aren’t fully accessible:

  • Some of the Pathway headings are missing on the home page when zoomed 300%
  • The news article headings don’t fit in the box when zoomed 300%
  • It’s not possible to navigate the markers on the map using a keyboard
  • The Google translate service doesn’t fit on screens on some mobile devices

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

  • our services map is a visual aid but we do provide addresses in the services lists
  • our Restorative Justice Information for Offenders PDF was produced by a third party

Non compliance with the accessibility regulations

Some images don’t have a text alternative, so the information in them isn’t available to people using a screen reader. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (non-text content).

We plan to add text alternatives for all images by September 2020. When we publish new content we’ll make sure our use of images meets accessibility standards.

Some of our links don’t make sense and cannot be determined by the link text itself. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.9. We plan to change all linking text by September 2020.

Disproportionate burden

To change the way in which the Pathways are listed we feel would reduce the usability of that section.  We do however plan to add each pathway in the main navigation by September 2020.

To change the news article headings don’t fit in the box when zoomed 300% 

  • it’s not possible to navigate the markers on the map using a keyboard
  • the Google translate service doesn’t fit on screens on some mobile devices

Navigation and accessing information

There’s no way to skip the repeated content in the page header (for example, a ‘skip to main content’ option). This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.1 (bypass blocks).

It’s not always possible to change the device orientation from horizontal to vertical without making it more difficult to view the content. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.4 (orientation).

It’s not possible for users to change text size without some of the content overlapping. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.4 (resize text).

PDFs and other documents

Our Restorative Justice Information for Offenders PDF was produced by a third party and doesn’t meet accessibility standards - it’s not structured so it’s accessible to a screen reader. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.2. By September 2020, we plan to either fix this or replace it with accessible HTML pages.

The accessibility regulations don’t require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services. For example, we don’t plan to fix [example of non-essential document].

Any new PDFs or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards.

How we tested this website

This website was last tested on 12/08/2019. The test was carried out by 1010 Media Limited.

We decided to text the Home page because this is our primary landing page, our Find Support page because this lists all the services we have and our Contact Us page so people can get in touch if they do have accessibility problems.
